Step 1: Shut Off the Main Water Supply
Locate your main water shutoff valve. In most East Gwillimbury homes, this is located in the basement where the main water line enters the foundation (often near the front wall or furnace room). Turn the valve handle clockwise to cut the main water supply instantly.
Step 2: Turn Off Electrical Power If Flooded
If standing water has reached outlets, electrical cords, or your sump pump cabinet, do not step into the water. Go to your main electrical panel and shut off the main breaker to eliminate shock hazards.
Step 3: Clear Drains and Open Faucets
After shutting the main valve, turn on the lowest faucets in your home (tubs or laundry basins) to drain remaining water out of the pipes, preventing it from leaking through the burst section.
Step 4: Call a 24/7 Emergency Plumber
Do not attempt to patch a major split pipe yourself with tape. Call our local emergency dispatch immediately to get a licensed technician to perform a permanent replacement.
